フォノン明和の代表者ポートレート

The history of Phonon Meiwa began in 1894 and now spans more than a century. Guided by our corporate philosophy of “Creation and Challenge,” and supported by our customers, we have created ceramic products and technologies suited to the needs of each era and have steadily expanded our business.
Today the global economy and the structure of society are undergoing a period of profound change, and this is affecting the environment in which we operate.
The rapid globalization of the economy has brought emerging economies to the fore. Competition with companies in those countries grows ever more intense and markets continue to expand steadily; at the same time, we face environmental problems such as global warming, pollution and the depletion of resources, as well as economic disparity, which brings social issues such as poverty and human rights to the surface.
As a company whose business is sustained by the bounty of nature, we work to reduce our environmental impact, confront social issues sincerely, and contribute through our business activities to a sustainable future for the earth.
In the developed world, meanwhile, the age of big data has arrived. In order to capture the customer needs and business opportunities that lie beyond new developments such as smart communities and a low-carbon society, we will strengthen the competitiveness of our existing businesses while creating original technologies that contribute to growth fields.
At Phonon Meiwa we put our passion into every single product. Carrying forward the spirit of “Creation and Challenge,” we are determined to press ahead and write the new chapter of our history that is now beginning.
We look forward to your continued support.

Creation and Challenge

Since ancient times human beings have hunted with stone arrowheads, and learned to shape earth and cast it into fire to make earthenware, which they valued as a tool. The raw material of that earthenware was earth, and the raw material of the arrowhead was stone. Earthenware made from earth eventually breaks, and returns to the earth once more.
That earthenware is precisely ceramic. Fine ceramics are what is obtained by extracting from the earth only what is truly needed and drawing out its function to the fullest. Yet its origin is still earth and stone. Once fine ceramics have fulfilled their purpose, they too return to the earth. They do no harm to people or to nature. In other words, ceramics are a material that is gentle to people and to the planet.
This material also holds great possibility. Staking our future on that possibility, we will strive with abundant creativity and unceasing challenge so that a bright and prosperous human society and an earth rich in nature can coexist.

Origin of the Company Name

Heat conduction and the absorption and emission of light — important properties of ceramics — arise from the lattice vibrations of crystals, and the concept of quantized lattice vibrations is called the phonon. We chose this name for our company to convey to our customers the burning passion we hold for ceramics.
